Concentration Piece #1: Book Cover |
Size: 17 in x 11 in x 0.5 in
Materials: Air Dry Clay, Mirror, Acrylic Paint Process: The back of the book is carved into the shape of a circular mirror. The mirror accents were created out of air dry clay and the inside is acrylic painted on cardboard. |
|
Size: 6 in x 3.5 x 3.5
Materials: Clay and Acrylic Paint Process: The bottom piece of the heart was thrown on the wheel, and the top was hand-built, to create a container. After firing the clay and painting it, I broke it apart using a hammer, using glue to re-attach it and metallic paint to emphasize the cracks. |
|
Size: 4 in x 1 in x 8.5 in
Materials: Clay, Plaster, Platter, Nails Process: The base of the brain was built with a thick pinch-pot, and the texture on top was created using coils of clay. After it was fired, I split it with a hammer and chisel to break it apart. The teeth were a mold of my own teeth from the orthodontist, that I painted over to give them a monstrous appearance. |
Concentration Piece #4: The Hand and Candle
|
Size: 5.5 in x 11 in x 4.5 in
Materials: Candle, Plaster, Air Dry Clay, Wood Process: The hand was first molded with plaster poured inside a glove, then broken and reformed to create a closed fist. The missing pieces were filled with air dry clay, and the hand is wrapped around the wooden candle base. The wax was melted using a heat gun to form a heart shape. |
|
Size: 11 in x 14 in x 1 in
Materials: Clay and Wood Process:The hands were hand-built on top of a clay slab, and carved through to thin out the clay. Because of this there were holes showing through the front, which I used as strategic vulnerable points to break. The letters on the wood are words associated with love and heartbreak, while seeming chaotic and random. |
|
Size: 10.5 in x 16 in x 2 in
Materials: Clay and wood Process: Like piece #5, the mouth was created on top of a slab of clay, and every letter in the background was carved out carefully to all be similar size and shape, to not draw too much attention to it. Unlike piece #5, the letters do not form a word to emphasize the chaos in the sculpture. |
Concentration Piece #7+#8+#9: Broken Promise (WIP) |
Size: 4 in x 7 in x 2.5 in
Materials: Air Dry Clay Process: |
Concentration Piece #8: Broken Phone |
Size: 8 in x 6 in x 4 in
Materials: Clay, Air Dry Clay, Wood, and Glass Process: The cell phone was created by connecting two clay slabs, and carving out the screen. The fist however was too thick to be made out of clay, so it was created out of air-dry clay, constantly referencing my own hand. Once the pieces were ready to attach I smashed a pane of glass, and carefully attached each piece on. |
